Boghi Awareness Campaign – Controlling Pollution, Protecting Health
In response to the annual environmental hazard caused by the burning of plastics and tires during the Boghi festival, PLANT organized a targeted Boghi Awareness Programme aimed at CBOs and Association leaders in Chennai city. The campaign promotes safe celebrations while curbing harmful air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
This initiative is part of PLANT’s broader work in climate change adaptation, pollution control, and biodiversity conservation. Through trainings, workshops, and public campaigns, we engage with both urban and rural communities to build awareness and action toward a healthier environment.
Key Campaign Activities
- Street theatre and visual media campaigns in key urban locations to highlight the dangers of plastic burning.
- Pamphlet distribution and educational sessions for the general public and student communities.
- Climate change rallies involving over 1,000 students and 500 auto-rickshaws, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
- Awareness training to local CBOs and associations on air quality, health risks, and sustainable practices during festivals.
The awareness rally was flagged off by a senior Indian Administrative Service officer, adding credibility and momentum to the campaign.
Long-Term Climate & Biodiversity Action
In rural areas, PLANT has created ECO Clubs in villages to promote local biodiversity conservation. We have conducted Bio-Cultural Protocol exercises with indigenous communities to protect native species, water bodies, flora, fauna, and traditional knowledge.
We support Biodiversity Management Committees and train youth to document species in the People’s Biodiversity Register. These efforts build a culture of stewardship rooted in community values and scientific understanding.
