FIMSUL – Fisheries Management for Sustainable Livelihood
The Fishery Management for Sustainable Livelihood (FIMSUL) project, implemented by PLANT in collaboration with FAO and the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department, represents a significant effort to promote sustainable fishing practices and enhance the management of fisheries resources in Chennai.
Through a series of focus group discussions and interactions with fishermen groups and stakeholders at Chennai Fishing Harbour in Kasimedu, PLANT aimed to foster co-management of fishery resources. This led to the formation of a co-management committee chaired by the Fisheries Department.
The committee plays a crucial role in regulating inappropriate fishing gear and promoting responsible fishing. One of the notable achievements was the implementation of bans on harmful gear operations, supporting long-term sustainability.
As part of the World Bank and FAO-assisted FIMSUL Project, PLANT organized a series of stakeholder workshops in Tamil Nadu to gather expert input and community feedback. These workshops were instrumental in shaping the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Policy and promoting inclusive governance.
These efforts underscore the importance of collaboration and participatory decision-making in conserving marine ecosystems and supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities.
