Empowering Irula Tribal Women through Oyster Culture

PLANT, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu State Fisheries Department, has introduced and demonstrated Oyster Culture activities among the Irula tribal communities at Pulicat. This initiative aims to improve marine biodiversity and enhance the sustainable livelihoods of marginalized fisherfolk, especially women, living in the Pulicat Lake ecosystem.

The oyster culture technique involves binding oyster seeds onto ropes, which are then submerged in strategic aquatic zones. Tribal women were trained in this method to manage the process—from seed handling and rope preparation to monitoring and harvesting.

By empowering Irula women with knowledge and hands-on training, the project not only fosters economic resilience but also promotes community-based conservation and responsible use of marine resources.

"When traditional knowledge meets scientific methods, communities thrive and ecosystems flourish."
