UNDP GEF Assessment Visit

The visit of the GEF and UNDP assessment team to Chennai on 7th September 2019 marked an important occasion to evaluate the current status of marine fisheries resources, fisheries co-management practices, and coastal biodiversity in Tamil Nadu. The team's comprehensive assessment aimed to gather insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the region's fisheries sector and biodiversity conservation efforts.

During their visit, the assessment team had the opportunity to engage directly with traditional fishermen groups at the Chennai Fishing Harbour, gaining valuable perspectives on the ground realities of marine fisheries and the livelihoods dependent on them. This interaction provided firsthand insights into the challenges faced by fishermen and the importance of sustainable fisheries management practices.

Subsequently, the team visited the Tamil Nadu State Fisheries Department, where they had a fruitful discussion with Ms. Noorjagan, the Additional Director. Ms. Noorjagan elaborated on the state's fisheries development policies and programs, highlighting key issues and concerns related to fisheries management and conservation.

Additionally, the team visited the National Biodiversity Authority, where PLANT served as the host. This visit provided an opportunity to explore the role of biodiversity conservation efforts in the context of marine ecosystems and coastal regions.
