Live Rock – Coral Rejuvenate Project

The Coral Rejuvenate project initiated by PLANT aims to enhance the coral ecosystem in Chennai with support from the Direct Aid Project of the Consulate General of Australia. This initiative involves importing natural live rock from Australia and deploying it along the Tamil Nadu coast in collaboration with local fishermen.

In alignment with the Australian Government's Blue Economic Aquaculture Challenges, this project contributes to global sustainable fisheries goals. The inauguration was graced by esteemed guests, including the Australian High Commissioner, the Consul General in Chennai, and marine experts from Australia.

PLANT founder Dr. R.T. John Suresh delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of artificial reefs and live rock in revitalizing marine biodiversity. The launch coincided with the visit of an Australian Navy ship, whose officers were also present.

Ms. Ishara Devey, an environmental advocate, inaugurated the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing the need for innovative, science-backed restoration efforts. Her keynote underlined the urgent need for reef conservation through community and international cooperation.

Attendees witnessed the deployment of live rocks into the sea near Chennai Fishing Harbour. These rocks serve as essential substrates for coral growth, playing a critical role in rebuilding reef structures and supporting marine biodiversity.

Ms. Devey acknowledged the efforts of all partners involved and called for sustained commitment to protect oceans. This project is a beacon of Indo-Australian collaboration in marine conservation and sustainable aquaculture.

“Restoring our reefs is not just about saving corals—it’s about sustaining communities, traditions, and future life beneath the waves.”
