Community Based Ice Plant
The establishment of a community-based ice plant supported by the MAPS CSR project in Kokilimedu fishing village near Mahabalipuram stands as a testament to the power of collective action and collaboration in addressing local challenges and fostering sustainable development.
Prior to the establishment of the ice plant, fishermen in Kokilimedu faced significant hurdles in preserving commercially valuable fish due to the lack of access to ice blocks. This situation left them vulnerable to exploitation by traders who purchased fish at low prices, exacerbating economic hardships for the community.
Recognizing the need for a solution, the villagers of Kokilimedu came together to devise strategies to overcome this challenge. Through discussions in Panchayat meetings and collective decision-making, they approached PLANT for support in establishing a community-based ice plant in their village.
With the assurance of land and building contributions from the village Panchayat, PLANT engaged with MAPS to secure CSR funding for the installation and commissioning of the ice plant. Concurrently, the Panchayat took initiative in constructing a building to house the ice plant, demonstrating their commitment to the project's success.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of PLANT, MAPS CSR, and the proactive involvement of the village community and Panchayat, the ice plant in Kokilimedu is now operational. Not only does it address the critical need for fish preservation, but it also empowers the community by providing them with control over a vital aspect of their livelihoods.
The successful establishment and self-management of the ice plant by the community underscore the importance of local ownership and sustainability in development initiatives. By harnessing resources, expertise, and support from various stakeholders, Kokilimedu has set a precedent for grassroots-driven solutions to enhance economic resilience and improve livelihoods.
