EDF and PLANT Trust Sign MoU to Strengthen Sustainable Marine Fisheries in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
We are pleased to announce that the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Participatory Learning Action Network and Training (PLANT Trust) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the “Sustainable Marine Fisheries Value Chain and Traceability Initiative” in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The initiative aims to strengthen sustainable and responsible fisheries through improved fisheries value chains, traceability systems, post-harvest practices, market linkages and stakeholder capacity building. The programme will involve engagement with fishing communities, fish workers, traders, processors, exporters, cooperatives, government departments, academic and technical institutions and other relevant stakeholders.
Key activities will include value-chain assessments, field research, stakeholder consultations, fisheries traceability and digital record-keeping, catch documentation, value-chain digitisation and pilot testing of traceability systems. The initiative will also support capacity-building programmes, technical consultations, workshops and knowledge-sharing activities, including engagement with the Department of Fisheries and other relevant institutions.
Particular attention will be given to strengthening traceability practices and supporting activities associated with PM-MKSSY, while promoting better coordination among stakeholders across the fisheries supply chain—from fishing and landing centres through post-harvest handling, processing and markets.
Through this collaboration, EDF and PLANT Trust seek to contribute to more transparent, sustainable and resilient marine fisheries value chains, while supporting fishing communities and other stakeholders in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The partnership represents an important step towards combining technical expertise, field-level experience, stakeholder participation and policy engagement to advance sustainable fisheries management and responsible seafood value chains in the region.
